happy 18 month birthday to our sweet caroline! she's growing up so quickly. almost exactly 2 years ago we found out that we were having a girl!! surprised is not even the right word for it! we both always hoped we would have a girl, but neither of us ever thought we would. i had just come to terms with the idea that, just like everyone in john's family, we would probably have 3-4 boys and definitely no girls. unfortunately, the excitement of finding out she was going to be a girl was tainted by the finding of a few cysts in her brain. it was a scary time for us - we were worried about our little girl. but as always, God is faithful. he answered our prayers and gave us peace. he healed her and today we have a beautiful, spunky, and perfectly healthy baby girl! and i love that part of her story includes such a beautiful display of God's faithfulness - before she was ever even born.
caroline is growing and changing so much every day. it's hard to even remember all that she's saying and doing right now, especially since by tomorrow it will probably change! she's running and trying her best to jump and skip like her brother. she goes up and down the stairs easily and doesn't want any help. she's definitely miss independent! she likes to kick and throw balls. she loves to play at the playground - she will swing on the "big" swings by herself (no more baby seat for her!), climb up the ladder and go down the slide, and even jump and run on the bouncy bridge with the big kids. she has figured out how to climb up onto the bar-height chairs that go with our breakfast table and now we often turn around to her standing on one asking to "pump" (aka jump) off of it! crazy girl!
the biggest development recently is that all of a sudden she LOVES the pool. since she was a baby she has not liked the pool. she would cry and cling to me and constantly ask to get out. but one of the days we went swimming in austria caused her to have a sudden change of heart. she's so brave (a little too brave! i have to go get her some floaties asap!) and just smiles and laughs the whole time she's in the water. she will float on her back with help, "dive" in from the step, "swim" and kick her feet. she will even jump in from the side, go all the way under, and come up laughing and kicking. it's pretty incredible how much that has changed in just a few days!
i guess growing up with a big brother has influenced her already, because even though she loves her babies and sleeps with them at night, during the day she plays with cars, trucks, "choo-choos", and soccer balls. she loves to play in the dirt, mud, and sand and splash in puddles.
her language has exploded in the past month and she's starting to use phrases and not just single words. she almost always says "pease" when she wants something (signing it at the same time she says it), and often uses it instead of saying "yes" (i.e. "Caroline would you like to go outside?" "Pease!"). A few of her typical words/phrases include:
-bella, mommy, daddy, bubby, gigi, papa
-"yo" = phone
-"yaddy" still means both water and cup
-"hi papa!" - what she says every time she picks up a phone
-"oh-jooo" = hold you = please pick me up!
-"sheese" = hand (no idea where that came from...)
-"me too" - she says this one often if she wants something quinn has (usually food)
-"awe dit it" = i'll get it
-"bob?" = can i watch veggie tales?
-"oh-tayyyy" = okay
-"up-eee-doh" = up we go! (when going up stairs)
-"geee down" = get down; usually to bella if she's begging for food, or if she wants to get down from the table
-"side?" = can i go outside/inside?
- "boppy" = paci
-"pump" = jump
-"tetch" = catch
-"chuice" = juice
she also still does this funny thing with some words where she sort of grunts/hums/breathes out through her nose and does the syllables of the word but doesn't say it. it's hard to describe exactly what it sounds like. but that's how she says "blanket", "cracker", and a few other words, every time.
i love that she's independent, brave, goofy, outgoing, and has strong opinions. i love that she's also a snuggly girl who sometimes just needs her mommy. she's hilarious and sweet and silly.
we love you so much, sweet caroline grace.
